The importance of family businesses in Switzerland is extremely high

A key aim of the Family Business Award is to publicly communicate the important contributions made by family businesses to the Swiss economy. AMAG Automobil- und Motoren AG set up the Family Business Award in honor of its founder and patron Walter Haefner, who always believed in and championed the fostering of a genuine corporate culture. The award aims to draw attention to the extremely important role of family businesses in the country’s economy. It is awarded to family firms from Switzerland that demonstrate an acute sense of responsibility and entrepreneurial sustainability. The term “family business” refers to companies in which the majority stakeholding is owned by members of one family. In addition, either the Chair of the Board of Directors or operational management must be in the hands of a family member.

Family-run businesses stand out thanks to their:

  • long-term thinking and actions
  • strong corporate culture
  • high level of social and corporate responsibility
  • dynamism and flexibility
  • strong personal relationships with their employees
  • high degree of equity financing
