To achieve this, we developed the new Microcut product line with a fully reconceived 4 mm high-preci- sion shaft. The impressive result shows what can happen when a highly innovative team of developers has plenty of room to come up with solutions. At all times in the project, they could question production processes and geometric features. Focused on the essentials — for more stability We reduced the tool design to the bare minimum of needed features and concentrated on the essentials: retaining maxi- mum stability and cost effectiveness. In order to leave as much mass as possible around the end teeth, the tool flanks are el- liptically relief-ground. The chip spaces are perfectly matched to the size of the chips and the spiral flutes are kept as short as possible. These innovative features ensure maximum stability. Elliptical relief grinding takes a lot of time to produce on tool grinders. This is just one of the reasons why such design ap- proaches were abandoned in the past. But lasers have created new options and new freedom for manufacturing of tools. The first prototypes produced by laser showed not only excellent performance but also new horizons in production efficiency. The 0.8 mm Microcut tool could be produced with a laser in a third of the time that it took with a state-of-the-art tool grinder. Groundbreaking technologies and concepts This clear difference created such a powerful incentive to de- velop the production technology that it spurred quantum leaps in grinding techniques in a short time. The design purism of the spherical tool was so impressive that it was also transferred to toric and cylindrical tools. The entire conceptual approach in the development phase was inspiring, and it will continue to serve as a model for imple- menting future development projects.
