IT is a wide occupational field that is developing at a very fast pace; a willingness to learn is thus indispensable. The main areas in this profession are support, system engineering and application development. At some locations, there is also a generalist orientation. Different requirements and skills are called for depending on the area of work.
Support: support staff often work directly on the customer’s premises, show them how to operate equipment and advise on customisation questions. They install, maintain and repair IT equipment (computers, networks, printers, copiers etc.). They locate faults, dismantle systems, check components and sub-assemblies, replacing them where necessary. Because each day brings new challenges, customer orientation and flexibility are essential.
System engineering: today, computers are linked together by means of networks; they serve to exchange information and distribute work. As a general rule, these networks are required to operate around the clock; they have to be assembled, operated, expanded and monitored. This is the task of the system engineer. They install computer systems and software, expand equipment configurations and train users. Here security and protecting information is taking on an ever more important role.
